The structure of the junior program has been set up to provide a young cricketer with a defined path at the club, from the age of 10 or 11 through to our senior sides. The initial contact with East Torrens will usually be through the Kanga or Have-A-Go cricket organised through SACA and our Primary Schools coordinator (refer to contacts page).
The first direct contact will be through invitation to register interest in the Ray Sutton Shield squad program, which will usually commence training in the first week of August each year. From this squad of year 7, 6 and 5 boys, we will choose the Ray Sutton Shield squad (13 boys) and a squad for our Under 13 team. The Ray Sutton Shield squads will be supplemented by Under 14 age group boys to form the squad for choosing our two Under 14 teams.
After two or three years in the Under 14 program, the boys are ready for Under 16 cricket. Some boys of advanced physical maturity may already have played one or two games at Under 16 level by this stage. Often we have several Under 16 boys in our senior teams, providing a great learning opportunity for these boys. In any case, a number of Under 16 boys are encouraged through the year to train with the senior teams, which benefits both the boys in lifting their intensity, and the club through a deliberately integrated approach.
